Bangladesh Women on the Brink of T20 World Cup

The Bangladesh women’s team has moved to the doorstep of qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Bangladesh's women have won five of their five consecutive matches in the qualifiers.

Nigar Sultana Jyoty’s side took a giant step towards the World Cup by defeating Thailand by 39 runs in the Super Six stage of the qualifiers on Wednesday. Bangladesh will secure a place in the main tournament if they win one of their remaining two matches, or even if one of those matches is washed out.

There is also another scenario in Bangladesh’s favour. If the Netherlands defeat the United States in their match scheduled for later today, Jyoty and her teammates will qualify for the World Cup outright, without having to depend on the results of their remaining games.

Batting first after losing the toss in Multan, Bangladesh suffered an early setback as Dilara Akter was dismissed off the very first ball. Soon after, fellow opener Sharmin Akter departed for 11 off 9 balls, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 12 for 2.

However, Joyaeria and Sobhana steadied the innings with a massive 110-run partnership for the third wicket. Both batters scored half-centuries. Joyaeria made 56 off 45 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes, while Sobhana struck 59 off 42 balls with nine boundaries and one six.

Bangladesh then lost five wickets for just 21 runs and were eventually bowled out for 165. Ritu Moni added a quick 15 off 6 balls towards the end.

Chasing a target of 166, Thailand were restricted to 126 for 8, handing Bangladesh a convincing 39-run victory. Marufa Akter led the bowling attack with three wickets, while Ritu Moni and Swarna Akter picked up two wickets each.

Sobhana Mostary was named Player of the Match for her outstanding knock of 59 runs off 42 deliveries.
